Not only is La Mongie the largest ski-area in the French Pyrenees - with over 125 km of runs and around 65 lifts - but it also has the most technical skiing of the massif. At the top it's 2450m (8100 feet) with over 1100m of vertical drop. There are some really challenging black pistes along with some more family-orientated red, blue and green slopes and extensive off-piste. Here you get all the advantages of a skiing holiday in the Alps but without the crowds or the Alpine prices! And there's a double whammy - the air fares are unbelievably cheap from Gatwick to Toulouse!! And now with the new N'PY alliance between several local Pyrenees resorts you can now ski over 300km of pistes (220 lifts) in the locality at much reduced lift prices. All the resorts in this new collaborative chain are drivable for day trips from Villa Tamerza and Peyragudes and Gourette have made extensive changes to their skiing terrain during the summer - so are well worth a day trip. If you haven't tried skiing in the Pyrenees, you must try La Mongie-Bereges ! Lots of off-piste powder too, which doesn't get skied out before breakfast, like it does in the Alps! Take a look at our picture gallery from recent seasons - great snow at La Mongie - and right at the end of the season too - CLICK HERE for the Picture Gallery or Click here for a La Mongie/Bareges PISTE MAP La Mongie-Bareges is situated almost midway along the length of the Pyrenees mountains which form the border between France and Spain and stretch some 200 miles between Perpignan in the east and Biarritz in the west. In total there are 38 French ski resorts in the Pyrenees and La Mongie-Bareges is the largest by far. La Mongie is a modern, purpose-built ski station situated at 1800m on the east-facing slopes of the Pic du Midi de Bigorre. Bareges on the other hand is an older, more traditional mountain village situated at the foot of the west face of the Pic du Midi. Access to La Mongie is slightly easier. The nearest main towns are Bagneres de Bigorre - about 20 minutes drive from La Mongie and Lourdes which is about 40 minutes drive from either La Mongie or Bareges. If you're looking for a Pyrenees ski chalet to rent - Find out about Villa Tamerza - the sports chalet in the Pyrenees. You can choose to ski or snowboard, both on and off piste, and the variation is huge. You can stay for a week and not do the same run twice! The area is very well-connected, lift-wise, and you can ski down to La Mongie and the resort village of Bareges on the other side of the Pic du Midi. Jan 31st 2010- The slopes are still pretty uncrowded, but the French holidays begin this week. With the new N'PY alliance between several local Pyrenees resorts, you can now ski over 300km of pistes in the locality at much reduced lift prices. |
La Mongie and its sister resort Barèges, have a great snow record. Late in the season the snow can get a bit slushy
in the afternoons on south-facing slopes. But last year (2008-2009) there were heavy snow falls well into April -
although snow generally was in shorter supply elsewhere in Europe. We enjoyed fantastic snow conditions through
March and April 2009.
